11 January - Dr Rob Portass (Lincoln University) ‘The Anglo-Saxon Origins of an” English” State Rob will explain how a distinctive 'English state' emerged during the Anglo-Saxon period. 8 February - Colin Hyde (Leicester University) The East Midlands Oral History Archive Colin will demonstrate the range of the East Midlands Oral History Archive and will show how 'amateur' historians can use oral history and sound archiving in their researches. FRCMOC 21 March Friends of Rutland County Museum and Oakham Castle AGM 11 April - Phil Harding – Leicestershire and Rutland detectorist Metal Detecting & Archaeology ‘ Roman Riddles and Saxon Secrets 9 May – RLHRS AGM followed by Jennifer Browning The Rutland Mosaic Post Excavation Assessment(ULAS) Jennifer will explain the latest findings, arising from last year's excavations at the Rutland mosaic site. FRCMOC 13 June - Dr Stephen Upex The Roman in the Nene Valley 11 July – Heritage Open Evening as part of the Council for British Archaeology Festival of Archaeology. An opportunity to discover the diverse range of Heritage activities and groups in Rutland, both the natural and built environment. 21 September – Village Visit – Advance Bookings only 10 October - Dr Jemima Hubberstey “I never was so totally without amusement of any Kind”, Lady Margaret Heathcote (1733 - 1769) Jemima will explore the experiences of an upper-class lady, Margaret Heathcote, as she coped with her feelings of isolation in rural Rutland.
